About ESHSS

In recent years, there has been a remarkable increase in both popular and academic interest in Scotland’s rich history. This is reflected in the large number of new books on a wide variety of themes, a growth in local and family history societies, the new and innovative approaches by museums in the presentation of their collections, and in the ever-present fascination with Scottish history and the Scots of the past in film, television, media and literature.

The Economic & Social History Society of Scotland was formed in 1983 to provide a focus and outlet for new historical research. It continues in this role and its membership includes professional historians, schoolteachers, undergraduate and postgraduate students, archivists, librarians, museum curators, genealogists and a great many others across the world from all walks of life with a general interest in Scotland’s past.
